First dates? Lake Street Cafe does it by the books

Romance. Take a look at the formal dining room at Lake Street Cafe, and you can’t help but get romantic. Lovely surroundings, flowers, music, attentive staff … anything could happen in a setting like this.

Lake Street Cafe finished second in the Best Place To Go on a First Date category of this year’s Best of Sheboygan County balloting.

According to Lynn Shovan, co-owner of Lake Street Cafe, Cupid comes a calling with regularity at her restaurant.

And while love at first sight might not be on the menu, long-lasting love happens on any number of occasions. “We’ve had quite a few couple get engaged here,” she said.

But if the early moments of that first date tend to lean on the awkward side, Shovan has the perfect solution, literally on her menu.

“What we did with our dinner menus is we put them all in old books. These have proved to be really big icebreakers. We have Popular Mechanics. We have cookbooks. It’s a nice icebreaker to get the conversation going.”

Being that they operate in a small town, if Shovan knows the likes and dislikes of a certain couple, she’ll make sure the menu/book opens more then just a great dining experience. “Sometimes if we know the person, we’ll match the menu.”

Obviously, there’s a lot more then just great food on the menu at Lake Street Cafe.
